MANX BIODIVERSITY - THE VARIETY OF LIFE ON THE ISLE OF MAN

What is biodiversity and why do we need to know about it?

Biodiversity is all the life on earth. It is the huge range of plant and animal species that together create our wild places. Areas of wild places are called habitats. These habitats are themselves very varied. They evolved from the physical characterists of their local environment and from the particular range of species associations that developed.

We know we are losing habitats and species at an increasingly fast rate as human activity destroys or changes them. Not only are we fully dependant on biodivertity but also we are a part it. The dynamics of our activity does not necessarily need to cause biodiversity loss. It is therefore important that we study, record and undertsand the chages that are happening to our wild species.

On the Isle of Man there is a great variety of wildlife but even here it is continuously threatened by human activity and development. In order to protect these species properly we need to keep a track of what we have and what we are losing.

We would love you to contribute to wildlife conservation by helping us to find out what we have, what is disappearing and what is changing. Go here to find out more about how to record wildlife.
